IAIA - Institute of American Indian Arts

Educational Philosophy

The purpose of an IAIA education is to empower students who will utilize the power of art to enrich communities.

Students at IAIA become aware of the counter-narrative which emerges from the stories of tribal nations and peoples. They learn to participate fully in a culturally rich and diverse community in which no single culture is privileged above the others.

We do not teach culture here, but we reinforce existing cultural foundations. We encourage fearless creative expression and the self-discipline and self-knowledge required of artists and community leaders.

The Academic Programs at IAIA value:

  • Effective communication
  • Ethical behavior
  • Creative expression
  • Community engagement
  • Respect for diverse cultures
  • Power of place as a foundation of cultural and creative strength
