“IMPACTED NATIONS” COMES TO IAIA MUSEUM

From the landscapes depicted in Australian Aboriginal dot paintings to the patterns and regal colors of Mayan weavings, Indigenous artists across the globe have always been aware and understanding of the environment.

Today’s highly informed, well traveled, and politically attuned Indigenous artists live modern lives, but they do so understanding the powerful role environmental integrity plays in preserving Tribal lands and cultures.

A politically insightful and socially powerful exhibition opening at the IAIA Museum in Santa Fe on May 12 examines industry’s role in adversely effecting Reservation environmental quality across the continent. “Impacted Nations” looks at the results of hydroelectric, oil, natural gas, wind and nuclear power development. It originated from Honor the Earth, a Native rights advocacy organization headed by Winona LaDuke.
