CODIFIED SUBVERSION: Systematic Re-Evolution

Reflecting the broad range of artistic disciplines taught on IAIA’s 140-acre campus, the artists participating in this year’s graduation exhibition have submitted everything from painting and prints to jewelry and ceramics, plus several literary creations.

CODIFIED SUBVERSION: Systematic Re-Evolution is a testament of the adaptation and re-evolution of these students as they strive to co-exist in traditional and contemporary societies. Obtaining accreditation will allow them to be accepted by American culture as “educated” members of society. But as they venture beyond IAIA they will continue to be a voice and instrument for change for the communities they resonate from.
(Curators’ Statement by Baptiste Bayhylle-Monongye (Diné/Hopi), Kevin Brown (Diné) and Melissa Cody (Navajo)

The exhibition’s featured artists are Hoka Skenandore (Oneida/Oglala/Lusieňo), Cathy Rexford (Inupiaq of Northern Alaska), Orlando White (Diné), Julie Chrisjohn Bush (Oneida), Corey Garcia (Acoma Pueblo), Darlene James (Hopi/Tewa) and Keith BraveHeart (Lakota/Isleta)
This exhibition of work by graduating seniors continues through May 12, the day of IAIA’s 44th annual Commencement. On that day, a 2pm to 4 pm closing reception in Primitive Edge Gallery will conclude the show’s run.

For a full set of exhibition images, contact the IAIA Communications Department.
