OVER 2 DOZEN ARTISTS FEATURED IN FACULTY & STAFF EXHIBITION

Typically, the exhibition focus on the 140-acre campus of the Institute of American Indian Arts remains squarely on its diverse, multi-tribal student body. Attracted to IAIA from across the United States, Canada and the Arctic, this predominately Indigenous assemblage of emerging talents has earned a prominent place in Santa Fe’s competitive and fine arts scene.

Once a year, however, the spotlight changes direction as it shifts toward the highly acclaimed creations made by the accomplished faculty at IAIA . This year’s faculty and staff exhibition takes place in the first month of IAIA’s 2006-2007 academic year, making this the earliest faculty exhibition in recent memory.

According to Jesse Ryker Crawford, IAIA faculty member and Primitive Edge Director, the exhibition’s title was suggested by IAIA creative writing professor Jon Davis. Davis cited Yi-Fu Tuan’s writings in “Space and Pride” about the linkage between the concepts of ‘visibility’ and a ‘sense of place’.

Many, if not most of IAIA’s faculty, are pursuing fine arts careers that by any definition would be considered “high powered”. Pursued by art museums, included in major private collections, featured in national magazines and sought after at events such as Santa Fe Indian Market, the creations of IAIA’s faculty and staff are windows onto the top tier of contemporary Native American art.
