EARTH BLESSING CEREMONY & GROUNDBREAKING FOR MAJOR IAIA CONSTRUCTION PROJECT

Construction gets underway at 11 a.m. this Friday (December 8) when the Institute of American Indian Arts hosts an Earth Blessing Ceremony and groundbreaking for a major addition to its 140-acre campus on the south edge of Santa Fe.

Press is invited to attend and cover this momentous occasion on IAIA’s campus.

Designated as the Center for Lifelong Education Residence and Conference Center, the project encompasses two related structures. One is a 77-room Residence Center whose suite-style quarters will house 154 students in a two-level, 35,370 sq. ft. configuration. The other structure is a 24,500 sq. ft. Conference Center whose two-level design embraces a performance room, bookstore, fitness center, catering facility, administrative offices and coffee shop. The Conference Center’s size might be raised to 28,000 sq. ft. in final design.

Construction costs for the Residence Center are estimated to be $7.7 million, while the Conference Center cost estimate is $5.3 million. The first completed structure will be the Residence Center in November, 2007, while the Conference Center’s completion date in May, 2008.

Both of these ADA compliant structures are designed to reflect updated interpretations of Pueblo architecture, and will incorporate Sustainable Futures Initiative values regarding energy usage, landscaping and water use.

Construction management is under the direction of IKBI/Martin Design Build Team, a joint venture between the 100% tribal-owned IKBI (Mississippi Choctaw Development Enterprise) and Albuquerque-based Gerald Martin General Contractor. Project architect is Dyron Murphy Architects PC, a Native American owned firm based in Albuquerque.
