IAIA GRADUATION CELEBRATES INDIGENOUS DIVERSITY
IAIA’s Class of 2007 invites the community of Santa Fe to its Commencement Exercises, which begin at 11am this Friday. Special guests participating in this year’s commencement ceremony include the Zotigh Singers and Mr. John Trudell.
The event’s Processional Hymn and Recessional Hymn, as well as its Honor Song, Victory Song, and Flag Song will be sung by the Albuquerque-based Zotigh Singers and accompanied by the Zotigh Drummers.
Mr. John Trudell, a Vietnam Veteran and one of the leading figures in the American Indian Movement (AIM), has achieved widespread recognition as a musician, author, poet, actor, and perhaps most of all as a political and social activist who has tireless worked on behalf of equality for American Indian and other Indigenous people. His life story provided the inspiration for “Trudell – The Movie”, a documentary released in 2006.
IAIA will award 4-year degrees to 25 Bachelor of Fine Arts and Bachelor of Arts students as well as 2-year degrees to 15 Associate of Fine Arts and Associate of Arts students. This preponderance of 4-year degrees reflects IAIA’s strong appeal to Tribal College transfer students pursuing academic as well as artistic excellence.
IAIA’s Commencements find many graduating students attired in their Tribes’ traditional clothing and regalia. Superb examples of quillwork, buckskin, beading, and headdresses are just a few examples of the ways IAIA students celebrate their cultural heritage. Commencement is a showcase of the broad diversity among IAIA’s student body. Following commencement there will be a luncheon for all graduates, students, families, guests and friends.
