PERSPECTIVES ON MORRISSEAU: SHAMAN ARTIST

The Conversations to Remember series strives for an informal, yet in depth discussion of selected issues in contemporary Native American arts. Perspectives on Morrisseau brings together a group of young scholars and curators whose research delves into the vibrant and complex world that Norval Morrisseau so masterfully evokes on his canvases. Committed to sharing his insights with both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal audiences, Morrisseau has created highly original works that fuse his unique vision of Anishnaabe (Ojibwa) spirituality with contemporary art methods. Panelists will briefly overview their individual projects on Morrisseau and consider some of the challenges they faced in fashioning or producing their interpretation of his work. The discussion will consider the kinds of interpretive strategies they appropriated, or even devised, to incorporate Anishinaabe philosophy into the understanding of Morrisseau’s work. How successful have they been in negotiating the boundaries within academic and institutional spaces in order to enlarge the public’s understanding of Morrisseau and where is there more work that needs to be accomplished? Join in the discussion with this Native contingent of scholars/curators/artists.
