IAIA HONORS STEWART & LEE UDALL
From 1961 until 1969, Mr. Stewart L. Udall served his nation as the United States Secretary of the Interior. Appointed by President John F. Kennedy, Secretary Udall had previously served as a member of the United States House of Representatives, having been elected to Congress by the citizens of his native Arizona beginning in 1954 and continuing until his joining President Kennedy’s Cabinet.
During his Congressional tenure Secretary Udall was widely respected for his expertise on issues of importance to all of the nation’s Indigenous people, from Native Americans to Alaska Natives and Native Hawaiians. In the 85th Congress he served on the Joint Committee on Navajo-Hopi Indian Administration.
During his years as the United States Secretary of Interior, Stewart Udall also stood tall on environmental protection, and it was under his leadership that landmark legislation such as The Wilderness Bill and The Wild and Scenic Rivers Act both became law. Four national parks, six national monuments, eight national seashores and lakeshores, nine national recreation areas, twenty national historic sites, fifty-six national wildlife refuges and The Land and Water Conservation Fund exist today as the result of his foresight.
On the evening of August 15, the Institute of American Indian Arts will honor not only Secretary Stewart Udall but also his late wife, Mrs. Lee Udall, for their longtime advocacy on behalf of IAIA and the thousands of Native people who have studied in the Institute’s studios and classrooms. The newly named IAIA President, Dr. Robert G. Martin (Cherokee Nation) and his wife, Luci Tapahonso (Dinè), will be on hand as Secretary Stewart Udall is presented with the IAIA Lifetime Achievement Award.
Also on the evening of August 15, in a courtyard reception at the IAIA Museum directly across the street from LaFonda, the Canadian Consul General, Alain Dudoit, will present artist Norval Morrisseau (Ojibwa) with Canada’s Lifetime Achievement Award. A retrospective of Morrisseau’s work, “Norval Morrisseau: Shaman Artist”, is featured at the IAIA Museum through September 3, 2007.
