PHILANTHROPIC VISION MEETS PRACTICAL APPLICATION

Proving that nothing succeeds like success, the beauty of IAIA’s 140-acre campus attracts guests appreciative of the distinctly American Indian environment of this 4-year college. From the Institute’s diverse student body to the design cues embedded in its contemporary architecture, IAIA reflects the full range of Indigenous culture and creativity. With a wealth of 50-mile, 180-degree views of northern New Mexico’s mountainous landscape, it’s easy to see why conference attendees are attracted to IAIA’s campus.

The broad range of seminars offered by the school’s Center for Lifelong Education (CLE) have proven successful at drawing conference and meeting attendees from the region’s Native and non-Native populations. CLE has earned a national reputation for programs addressing everything from borderland reservation security to the wellness concerns of American Indian elders.

One of the key supporters of both CLE’s innovative programs and of IAIA’s educational mission has been the W.K. Kellogg Foundation of Battle Creek, Michigan. The Foundation’s support for IAIA and its various programs tops $10.3 million over the last ten years, including $5 million of the $6.5 million that funds construction of IAIA’s new conference center, set to open in mid-2009.

On Monday, October 15, the Board of Directors of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, travels to IAIA for the first in a series of visits to various New Mexico projects receiving its support. In addition to IAIA the ten board members will visit Espanola’s NMSU campus, a weaving cooperative in Mora, Valley High School. in Albuquerque, and the Acoma Cultural Center.

“We’re honored to have the W.K. Kellogg Foundation’s distinguished Board of Directors visit the IAIA campus” said Hayes Lewis, Director of CLE. “Kellogg’s commitment to the education of American Indian people, and especially to IAIA, has been a positive force in thousands of lives,” he said.
