WAR PAINT - WAR & NATIVE AMERICA - CEREMONIES OF DIFFERENCE

Artists and military veterans Lemuel Charley (Dinè), Hayes Lewis (Zuni), Ed Yava (Hopi/Tewa), and IAIA Museum Curator Joseph Sanchez will discuss the unique experience of Native Americans in military service. Curator Sanchez will moderate an open-ended dialogue among the evening’s panelists. Of particular interest will be each panelists’ recollections of their military service as well as specific ways their Native communities reacted to both their departure for armed forces duty and their return as military veterans discharged back into civilian life.

Among the possible topics of discussion:
• Were ceremony and spirituality influential in guiding their re-entry into daily life
• How was military service viewed by members of their community, and did these perspectives differ from those of non-Native American communities.
• How was each panelist prepared for military service by their families.
• Did a “warrior mentality” influence their opinions about military service.
• What key challenges did they face in returning to daily life.
• How are their military experiences reflected in their art.
