A compelling look at the daily lives, aspirations, living conditions and families residing in the mountainous Haitian community of Ridore La Vallče de Jacmel, home to between 40,000 and 50,000 residents. These impoverished yet proud Haitians comprise the subject matter for Santa Fe photographer Jeane LaRance’s (Little Shell Tribe of Montana) one-artist exhibition in the Lloyd Kiva New Gallery of the IAIA Museum Store in downtown Santa Fe.
Ms. LaRance first became familiar with the lives of these rural Haitian people through her association with New Orleans-based non-profit A.H.D.H. (Association Haitienne Dčvelopment Humain), founded in 1986 by Dr. Charles Renč and a coalition of Haitian medical professionals.
The Haiti Project is an exhibition LaRance describes as “The most effective way that I, as a Native American woman, could explain to those who have not had an opportunity to visit Haiti the importance of the work A.H.D.H. is providing for Haiti’s people.”
