Santa Fe, NM – What happens when two artists who are influenced by graffiti, outsider and tattoo art, skateboarding culture and dj’ing finally get together? The Art of Broken Records at the IAIA Museum Store, that’s what. Hoka Skenadore and Micah Wesley will show recent paintings on vinyl records at the IAIA Museum Store (108 Cathedral Place) September 2 - October 12, 2008. An opening reception will be held Friday, September 5, 2008 from 4 -7 p.m. The public is invited; there is no charge to attend.

Influenced by graffiti from Texas to New Mexico, as well as the painted records of Gerhard Richter, the work included by Wesley and Skendadore contains interesting parallels. Wesley (a.k.a. DJ Kwai Kane) and Skenadore (a.k.a. DJ Rob Gordon) both understand the importance of the record in hip-hop culture, as well as the communicative powers of urban calligraphy or graffiti. Both are avid, if not obsessed record collectors. Both also ask, “Why stick with the rectangle or square when one has three hundred and sixty degrees to play with?” The result is pop-culture infused, street-smart imagery that uses a lot of color to communicate.
