The American Indian National Center for Television and Film and the Screen Actors Guild President’s National Task Force on American Indians are co-hosting “Careers in Focus: American Indians in Entertainment,” an inaugural networking event on Thursday, September 18, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. at the Autry National Center located at 4700 Western Heritage Way in Los Angeles, California. The event will present a unique way for industry professionals and American Indian actors, directors, writers and producers to interface, network and share best practices for increasing the visibility and employment of American Indian talent. The evening will begin with a panel discussion by representatives from the four major networks and studios. Refreshments will be served and opportunities for networking will be provided.
The American Indian National Center for Television and Film is a national resource center for American Indian talent. A partnership between the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA) and the country’s major broadcasters — ABC/Disney, CBS, FOX and NBC/Universal — the Center serves as a bridge between the American Indian community and the entertainment industry.
The President’s National Task Force on American Indians is member-led national committee within the Screen Actors Guild. The Task Force was created to promote and safeguard the interests and rights of American Indian performers in the motion picture, television, advertising and multi-media industries.
American Indian performers continue to be the least represented ethnic group in TV and film with less than 1 percent share of all roles. As the President’s National Task Force on American Indians and the American Indian National Center for Television and Film share the same mission to increase employment opportunities for American Indian talent and promote more accurate representations of contemporary American Indian communities, these two groups are working in concert to develop programs to achieve this collective mission.
For more information on how to attend this event, please call the American Indian National Center at 323.671.4175 or the SAG Affirmative Action and Diversity Department at 323.549.6644 or diversity@sag.org
