Shawnee jeweler Shawn Bluejacket and Laguna/Zuni Pueblo painter De Haven Solimon Chaffins will show their latest creations at the IAIA Museum Store (108 Cathedral Place) October 17 through November 23, 2008. The public is invited to view the show during regular Museum Store hours: Monday – Saturday: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday: noon to 5 p.m (closed on Tuesdays November through May). As with all IAIA Museum Store exhibits, the work will be available for purchase, and each purchase benefits the Museum.

Shawn Bluejacket was born in California and grew up in New Zealand. She studied metalsmithing at the Institute of American Indian Arts and also attended the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, RI. Bluejacket’s work is known for its textural sterling silver or 22K gold surfaces. Though her pieces look substantial, hollow-form construction makes them light and comfortable to wear. Each piece contains surprising, fun elements.

Solimon Chaffins received her AFA from the Institute of American Indian Arts and later went on to earn her BFA from the University of New Mexico. Traditional Pueblo stories and beliefs play an important part in Solimon Chaffins imagery. Her paintings have a strong visual presence as she fragments Pueblo iconography through abstracted forms, utilizing the negative space of the canvas as much as she does the primary subject matter.
