The Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA) Achein Center for Lifelong Education will host a workshop on cultural tourism December 10 - 12, 2008. The three-day event, titled Creating Sustainable Cultural Tourism: Developing Best Methods and Practices will cover a variety of topics on how those in Indian Country can best utilize tourism to benefit their communities. The workshop runs from 8 a.m to 5 p.m each day on the IAIA campus (83 Avan Nu Po Road) and there is a $75 registration fee. Although the sessions will focus on Native American communities, all are welcome to participate.

Presenters from around New Mexico will share their perspectives and expertise with workshop attendees. Alvin Warren, Secretary of the New Mexico Indian Affairs Department, Ron Solimon, CEO of the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center, Bruce Bernstein, Executive Director of the Southwestern Association for Indian Arts, Travis Suazo, Deputy Secretary of the New Mexico Indian Affairs Department and former Director of the New Mexico Indian Tourism Department and Tom Aageson, Executive Director of the Museum of New Mexico Foundation are just a few of the confirmed speakers.

Ramus Suina, Tribal Relations Specialist for the IAIA Achein Center for Lifelong Education notes, “Tourism can promote tribal enterprise and boost economic opportunities for Native people with minimal impact on their communities. For this reason, we encourage all tribal leaders and those in the tourism industry to attend, and to network with others who are looking to develop new programs and opportunities.”

The workshop is sponsored by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. For more information, including a comprehensive list of workshop topics and presenters and more information on how to register, please call the Center for Lifelong Education offices at 505-424-2387.
