Celebrate Indian Market Week with the Institute of American Indian Arts

What: Red Nation Presents E.Y.E.S for Earth – Environmental Youth Empowerment Summit

When: August 17, 2009: 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

Where: Museum of Contemporary Native Arts, 108 Cathedral Place

Details: The Museum of Contemporary Native Arts will host Help the Earth, a nonprofit organization that focuses on empowering youth through environmental activism, and their E.Y.E.S for Earth – Environmental Youth Empowerment Summit. Help the Earth was founded in 2005 by Montano Rain, son of Joanelle Romero. E.Y.E.S. for Earth operates in association with Roots and Shoots, a program of the Jane Goodall Institute.

This event is free for students from 13 -17 years of age.

What: IAIA Presents The '70s: The Revolution Continues!

When: August 19, 2000: 5:00 p.m.

Where: La Fonda on the Plaza, 100 E. San Francisco

Details: In 2012, IAIA will turn 50! Until that year, each decade of the Institute will be celebrated at our annual fundraising event, and this year it's the grooving '70s. Join alumni, supporters, illustrious artists, and more at this dinner and auction event held the evening of Wednesday, August 19, 2009. Actor Raoul Trujillo (True Blood, Apocalypto) and KOAT news anchor Royale Dá will serve as MCs.

IAIA's auction is the only event during Indian Market that directly supports Native American students. All proceeds go toward scholarships and student support programs.

What: Denise Wallace at the Museum of Contemporary Native Arts Store

Where: Museum Store and Lloyd Kiva New Gallery, 108 Cathedral Place

Details: The Museum of Contemporary Native Arts is proud to host legendary Chugach Aleut jeweler Denise Wallace. Wallace creates jewelry in silver, fossilized walrus ivory and colored stone, capturing Native Alaskan folklore and life. Come meet Denise at the opening reception. Free and open to the public.

What: Public Reception for The Drawings and Paintings of Daphne Odjig: A Retrospective Exhibition

When: August 20, 2009: 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.

Where: Museum of Contemporary Native Arts, 108 Cathedral Place

Details: Daphne Odjig (Potawatomi/Odawa/Ojibwe) travels to Santa Fe to attend a special reception for the exhibit The Paintings and Drawings of Daphne Odjig that features over forty years of her artistic career. Organized by the Art Gallery of Sudbury and the National Gallery of Canada, in collaboration with guest curator, Bonnie Devine (Ojibway), the Museum of Contemporary Native Arts will be the only venue in the United States to host the exhibit.

What: A Conversation to Remember: Daphne Odjig, Alex Janvier and Joseph Sanchez, Moderated by Bonnie Devine

Details: A conversation with the last remaining artists of the “Native Group of Seven:” Daphne Odjig (Potawatomi/Odawa/Odjibwe), Alex Janvier (Dene Suline/Saulteaux) and Museum of Contemporary Native Arts curator Joseph Sanchez. Moderated by artist, curator and educator Bonnie Devine (Ojibway). Free and open to the public.

What: Book Signing with Susan H. Totty, author of The Dedicated Collectors: The David and Barbara Wilshin Collection

When: August 21, 2009: 2:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.

Where: Museum Store and Lloyd Kiva New Gallery, 108 Cathedral Place

Details: “Achieving anything at a high level of excellence is difficult; it demands discipline, commitment, knowledge, passion and a dash if good fortune. Collecting is no different than anything else,” an excerpt from the Dedicated Collectors says. In this book, author Susan Totty explores the Wilshin’s amazing collection of American Indian art of the Southwest. The Wilshin’s treat the art objects in their collection almost as family friends about whom they have histories and stories to tell.

What: Emerging Artists Panel with Cannupa Hanksa, Sara Ortiz, Bradley Pecore, Rose B. Simpson and Micah Wesley, moderated by Karl Duncan

Where: Museum of Contemporary Native Arts, 108 Cathedral Place

Details: Because of the uniqueness of Native American art with respect to the broader art world, an active response must be made to address historical, cultural, social, and economic issues that play a role in the lives of the artists and communities that make up IAIA. A shared awareness and experience exist with regards to current issues in contemporary Native arts, which results in a need for critical analysis from within the contemporary Native art community. Topics for discussion will include identity, authenticity, innovation, markets and community. Sponsored by the Institute of Museum and Library Sciences and the College of Contemporary Native Arts' Associate Student Government, this talk features panelists who are all College of Contemporary Native Arts’ alumni with the exception of Cannupa Hanksa who is a currently enrolled as a student. This event is free and open to the public.

Details: The Museum Store at the Museum of Contemporary Native Arts highlights the work of artists Frank Buffalo Hyde, Waddie CrazyHorse, Paul Moore and Angie Reano-Owen during Indian Market weekend. Buffalo Hyde shows off new 2-D work while Crazyhorse, Moore and Reano-Owen bring their latest wearable creations (jewelry)! Buffalo Hyde, CrazyHorse and Moore will be present both days. What: Red Nation Presents Native Women in Music Performance

When: August 23, 2009: 12:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.

Where: Museum of Contemporary Native Arts, 108 Cathedral Place

Details: The Museum of Contemporary Native Arts hosts Native Women in Music, an acoustic musical and vocal performance featuring Joanelle Romero. Romero is an award winning director and producer, and founder of the Red Nation Celebration.
