IAIA—FLU GUIDELINES

IAIA Guidelines for Seasonal and H1N1 Flu


Given the start of fall classes and the return of students, faculty and staff to campus, IAIA officials are monitoring the H1N1 influenza (sometimes referred to as "swine flu") and its potential impact on campus operations. Please read the following guidelines for more information.


Symptoms:

Fever of 100 degrees or higher with either a cough or sore throat.


Tips for Avoiding Illness

  • Wash hands often with soap for 20 seconds with warm, soapy water or use instant hand sanitizer.
  • Use antibacterial wipes to frequently clean room surfaces.
  • Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth.
  • Cough or sneeze into your sleeve, or tissue, not your hand.
  • Immediately throw the tissue away and wash your hands.
  • Get a seasonal flu shot and the H1N1 ("Swine Flu") vaccine.
  • Get adequate sleep every night (7-9 hours), manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious foods.
  • Don’t share cups, make-up, eating utensils, lip balm, or water bottles with anyone.
  • Avoid close face-to-face contact with persons who are ill.

 

IF YOU HAVE FLU LIKE SYMPTOMS

  • Isolate yourself, stay at home and don’t come to work.
  • Contact your supervisor by phone or email if you can’t come to work.
  • Stay in touch with your supervisor to update them on how you’re doing.
  • If you cannot reach your supervisor, Human Resources at 505.424.2320.
  • Rest for 24 hours after symptoms have ended, then you can return to school.


On-Campus Students

  • Phone your RA, Housing Staff or Housing Director.
  • Return to your family home for isolation, if possible.
  • If isolating in your on-campus residence room or apartment, wear a mask in shared spaces, such as bathrooms, or when interacting with others.
  • Additional masks are available by calling the housing office 428-5802.
  • To Request meal delivery (residence center students or family resident with meal ticket): The RA or housing staff will deliver three meals during the weekdays and two meals during the weekends/holidays.
  • A weekly menu will be provided for you to choose your meals. Give your meal request to the RA or housing staff.
  • The RA or housing staff will bring it to your room. Deliveries will be between:
  • 8:00 a.m. - 9:00 a.m. (Weekdays)
  • 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m.
  • 5:00 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.

If your roommate is isolating:

  • Phone the Housing Director to see if there is the possibility of a short-term relocation if desired and if it’s available.
  • Clean your space, including door knobs and appliances, with a multipurpose cleaner or antibacterial wipes. Supplies are available from housing staff.
  • Contact your professors by phone or email, if you will miss class.
    Stay in touch with your professors & make up your work when you’re feeling better.
  • If you cannot reach an individual professor, contact Annie Saha, Assistant to the Faculty, at 424.2373 or asaha@iaia.edu.
  • Stay in touch with your parents and family members to update them on how you’re doing.

Commuter or off-campus students

  • Isolate yourself, stay at home and don’t go to any classes.
  • Contact your professors by phone or email, if you will miss class.
  • Stay in touch with your professors and make up your work when you’re feeling better.

Faculty and Staff:

  • Students, faculty and staff don’t need a doctor’s note to document absence.
  • Faculty & work study supervisors are in the best position to communicate to the students the need for staying home when ill to limit the spread of the virus.
  • Faculty & work study supervisors are urged to be much more flexible with their absence policy than usual.
  • Encourage students to pay close attention to their health and not neglect the need to eat, sleep and take study breaks.
  • Take care of your own health.
    Encourage them to follow the above procedures.
