Collection Holdings -
IAIA Administration files
(1960-pres.), this collection is comprised of the working
files of the Institute’s school and museum. Included
here are the correspondence, reports, information on faculty and
students, financial records, art collection transactions, property
transaction documents, Board of Trustee reports, annual reports
to Congress, ephemera, press, images and exhibit information that
span the history of the Institute. Founding documents and
writing of Lloyd New and George Boyce; documentation from the
Office of the President of the United States, Congress, the Department
of the Interior, the Bureau of Indian Affairs; records of dignitary
visits to IAIA, e.g. First Lady Ladybird Johnson, Stewart and
Lee Udall (Secretary of the Interior under the Kennedy and Johnson
administrations, and his wife). 300 linear feet, about 1/3 processed.
Smithsonian Photographs, National Anthropological Archives
Late 19th and early 20th Century photographs of Native Peoples and their communities. Prints include a broad representation of tribes from across the U.S. These prints are routinely accessed by our students for various research projects. 25 linear feet.
The Posters of IAIA
Includes posters for IAIA Museum exhibitions and the work of students and faculty at other galleries. 30 oversized document drawers.
Documentation Slide Collection, 1960-Pres.
Includes original slides by students, faculty and staff. Total of 70,000 slides. Unprocessed.
The Videotape Archive. There are about 2000 videotapes in the archives, some produced by or about IAIA students and faculty. Among these tapes is the series, the Native American Video Tape Collection, 1976-Pres. Begun by Claudia Snahwooksy (Cherokee) and the BIA in conjunction with the Nation’s Bicentennial, the Native American Video Archives Project consists of 260 videotapes produced by individual tribe members who went to Washington and were given video cameras and instruction to document their people. These individuals went back to their reservations and pueblos and documented what was happening at that time.
T.C. Cannon Library – former IAIA student (1960’s) and world renowned painter. The collection is comprised of books donated by Cannon’s sister to IAIA. These books are from the private library of T.C. Cannon, some annotated with his personal sketches, drawings, poetry and notes. 266 books.
IAIA Banner Collection -64 large format outdoor banners used to advertise IAIA Museum Exhibits and campus events.
The Lee and Stewart Udall & the Lloyd New Special Collections Area– Approximately 400 books donated by Stewart Udall, former Secretary of the Interior under the Kennedy and Johnson Administrations and by Aysen New, widow of Lloyd New, a founding father of IAIA.
