- The William Johnson Papers consist of administrative records, board minutes, manuscripts, slides, prints, video, periodicals, and ephemera (1.5 cu. ft) related to the history of IAIA and his role as the Chairman of the Board of IAIA. Notable subjects include the privatization of the Institute in 1986, transfer of 140 acres of Rancho Viejo property to IAIA in 1991, the establishment of the IAIA museum in the old federal building on Cathedral Place, the construction of the new IAIA campus, and activities of the IAIA foundation.
IAIA-MS002, George A. Boyce Jr. Papers (.25 cu. ft)
- The George A. Boyce Jr. Papers consist of photocopies of correspondence, notes, and manuscript material related to his father, Dr. George A. Boyce, and his involvement in the founding of IAIA. The material was provided by Boyce Jr. as recognition of his father’s deep involvement in the founding of the school, and to correct published misinformation. Of particular note is chapter VI of Hildegard Thompson’s book, which outlines Boyce’s contribution.

- The James A. McGrath Papers consist of correspondence, pamphlets, administrative records, photographic material, creative writing anthologies, newspaper clippings, scrapbooks, magazines, journals, publications, audio recordings, films, exhibit ephemera, IAIA publications, financial records, and oversize materials created and collected during his multiple posts at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
IAIA-MS004, Robert Best Papers (.5 cu. ft)
- The Robert Best Papers consist of correspondence, financial records, administrative records, meeting minutes, and other materials related to Best’s involvement in the IAIA Foundation, 1986-1998. The collection highlights the structure, activities, and dissolution of the former fundraising arm of IAIA, particularly the difficulties between IAIA BOT and the Foundations role in raising capital campaign funds for the new campus. MS 001, the Bill Johnson Papers, should be used in conjunction with this collection.
IAIA-MS005, Juanita Barry Papers (.25 cu. ft)
- The Juanita Barry Papers consist of correspondence, postcards, a poster, an audio recording, and photographs (1992-2002) related to her time as IAIA as Instructor of Dance.
IAIA-MS006, Laura Gilpin Photographs (.25 cu. ft)
- The Laura Gilpin Photograph Collection consists of various prints and photographs of southwestern and American Indian themes, 1947-1964. Gilpin was a prophetic photographer and more of her photography is located in various collections in the Archives of IAIA, including the McGrath Collection.
IAIA-MS007, Winona M. Garmhausen Papers (9.5 cu. ft)
- The Winona M. Garmhausen Papers consist of research materials, publications, newsclippings, correspondence, administrative records, photographs, slides, negatives, manuscript materials, notes, and other materials related to Garmhausen’s Ph.D dissertation and publication, The Institute of American Indian Arts, 1962-1978:with Historical Background, 1890-1962 and her time at IAIA as faculty.
IAIA-MS008, Robert Harcourt Papers (2 cu. ft)
- The Robert Harcourt Papers consist of newsclippings, publications, administrative records, correspondence, exhibit catalogs, and other materials related to Harcourt’s employment and involvement with IAIA. The strength of this collection lie in the newsclippings and various publications documented by Harcourt, all related to IAIA activities during the 1980s and 1990s. Particularly interesting is the discussion of administrative oversight, organization, financial problems, and student protest during the 1990s, documented in various newspapers and magazines collected by Harcourt. Biographies, articles, awards, and other materials regarding IAIA students and alumni abound in this collection. The publications of IAIA are also well represented in this collection, including Newswinds, Art Winds, and Drumbeat.
IAIA-MS009, Yeffe Kimball Collection, (9 cu. ft)
- The Yeffe Kimball Collection consists of filmstrips, 35 mm slides, color transparencies, and stereoscopic 3-D images related to a ten-year project (1950’s). Kimball traveled North and Central America to direct a photographic documentation project of the Native peoples of the continent. The collection contains over 7,000 images, some of them posed, but some of routine daily life, ceremonies, and culture. Select images can be found at New Mexico’s Digital Collections.
IAIA-MS010, Kay Weist Negative Collection, (4 cu. ft)
- The Kay Wiest Negative Collection consists of roughly 4,000 4x5 negatives related to her time as staff photographer at the Institute of American Indian Arts throughout the 1960s and 1970s. The collection documents students life, faculty, academic activities, student artwork, exhibitions, field trips, graduates, events, campus, and the BIA Collection (now referred to as the National Collection of Contemporary Native Art). Prints can be alternately found in RG-03, IAIA Images and select images can be found at New Mexico’s Digital Collections.
IAIA-MS011, Native American Video Tape Archive
- The Native American Video Tape Archive consists of 265 ¾” U-matic broadcast video tapes related to the program “The Native American, A Cultural Projection” during the 1976 Bicentennial Celebration. The project was funded and produced by the United States Department of Interior, Bureau of Indian Affairs.
