First Laugh

May 28, 2010 through July 11, 2010

Museum Store and Lloyd Kiva New Gallery, 108 Cathedral Place, Santa Fe, NM 87501 (Click here for a map)

American Indian humor has a style all its own and First Laugh, a group exhibit at the Lloyd Kiva New Gallery and Museum Store of the Museum of Contemporary Native Arts will illustrate just how funny artists can be.

The exhibit opens Saturday, May 29 from 12 noon – 2:00 p.m. at 108 Cathedral Place and will continue until July 11. As with all Museum Store exhibits, art work will be for sale and proceeds will go to the artists and the museum.

Slightly beyond the fray of humor (albeit closely related) First Laugh will also celebrate the phenomenon of Native American tricksters. Tricksters can be found in tribes all over the United States. Coyote, Weesageechak, Nanabush, Manapoose and Rabbit, for example, make appearances in everyday stories, legends and art.

At press time, participating artists included Marcus Amerman (Choctaw Nation), Bryon Archuleta (San Juan Pueblo), Marcus Cadman (Diné), James Jordan (Choctaw Nation), Linley B. Logan (Seneca), Ira Lujan (Taos Pueblo), Larry McNeil (Tlingit), America Meredith (Cherokee Nation), Henry Payer (Ho-Chunk), Monte Singer (Diné), Ryan Singer (Diné), Jacqueline Smith (Diné) and Brando Williams (Diné).
