[...] Ceramic artist and sculptor Peter Jones is an Iroquois of the Beaver Clan of the Onondaga Nation at the Cattaraugus Reservation in Seneca Territory. In the Native art world, Jones is a true master of the clay medium. For forty-five years he has honed his craft and a basic Google Image search will turn up some incredible results. From what I’ve seen of his repertoire, the work is impeccable in it’s detail and incredibly narrative-based and “living” for a type of art that at its least can seem so static. Jones is a master of “thrown clay”, a difficult technique that involves physically throwing clay to make each sculpture’s ‘body’ and then applying a meticulously sculpted head and face to each one. While thrown clay certainly falls in the realm of contemporary art, Jones is also credited for creating a renewed interest in and practice of traditional pottery among the Haudenosaunee (literally: “People of the Longhouse” – a.k.a. Iroquois). Read more about Peter B. Jones. [...]
