IAIA Spring Homecoming Powwow Celebrates Unique Cultural Traditions

The Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA) hosts the 2009 Spring Homecoming Powwow Saturday, May 9, 2009 on the IAIA Campus located at 83 Avan Nu Po Road. The event is free and open to the public, but guests are encouraged to bring their own chairs.

The powwow will include Head Man Kit Julianto and Head Lady M.J. Schenandoah, both IAIA students, MC Otis Halfmoon, Arena Director Bryan Tsosie, an IAIA staff member, Head Gourd Dancer TBA, Northern Drum TBA and Southern Drum the Zotigh Singers from Albuquerque, NM. All drums are welcome.

Registration for powwow participants begins at 11:00 a.m. Gourd dancing occurs at 11:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. while grand entry takes place at 1:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. A community potluck dinner featuring multicultural foods is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. In addition to the powwow, Saturday is filled with other activities, as well! A free, 5K run kick starts the day at 7:00 a.m. An academic open house will take place between 12:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m, so that visitors to campus can learn more about Santa Fe’s only four-year arts college. IAIA’s new student ambassador will be announced during the powwow, as well, at 4:00 p.m.
