Creative Writing Faculty Member Celebrates Release of Simon J. Ortiz: A Poetic Legacy of Indigenous Continuance

The College of Contemporary Native Arts is pleased to announce that its creative writing department chair, Evelina Zuni Lucero (Isleta/Ohkay Owingeh Pueblo), will be taking part in a book-signing and discussion for Simon J. Ortiz: A Poetic Legacy of Indigenous Continuance (UNM Press), May 29, 2009 from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. at the University of New Mexico Book Store, 2301 Central NE, Albuquerque. Lucero co-edited the collection of interviews, creative pieces and critical essays with Susan Berry Brill de Ramírez, professor of English at Bradley University.
Simon J. Ortiz (Acoma Pueblo) is widely regarded as one of the literary giants of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries with more than two dozen volumes of poetry, prose fiction, children’s literature, and nonfiction work to his credit. This edited volume is devoted to the depth and range of Ortiz’s contribution to contemporary Native American literature and literary scholarship showing his role in the development of cultural studies and Native American literature on a number of fronts. It includes interviews with Ortiz, short creative nonfiction essays by Native women writers and scholars, and innovative critical discussions by a dozen scholars of Native literature.
