The Museum of Contemporary Native Arts will celebrate the new book Simon J. Ortiz: A Poetic Legacy of Indigenous Continuance (UNM Press), by hosting Evelina Zuni Lucero (Isleta/Ohkay Owingeh Pueblos), chair of the creative writing department at the College of Contemporary Arts and writer Simon J. Ortiz (Acoma Pueblo) for a reading and book signing. The event will take place on Tuesday, July 14, 2009 from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the Museum located at 108 Cathedral Place. It is free and open to the public.

Lucero co-edited the collection of interviews, creative pieces and critical essays included in the book. Ortiz, who is widely regarded as one of the literary giants of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, has more than two-dozen volumes of poetry, prose fiction, children’s literature and nonfiction work to his credit. This edited volume is devoted to the depth and range of Ortiz’s contribution to contemporary Native American literature and literary scholarship showing his role in the development of cultural studies and Native American literature on a number of fronts. It includes interviews with Ortiz, short creative nonfiction essays by Native women writers and scholars, and innovative critical discussions by a dozen scholars of Native literature.
