The Expanding the Circle program at the College of Contemporary Native Arts is excited to sponsor a Native Youth Summit July 15-17, 2009, designed to provide Native American high school students with a glimpse of their future career. Workshops will provide a taste of the “real world,” as well as guidance on the educational paths students should take to obtain degrees and certifications to meet their professional goals. Graphic design, film-making, journalism, radio, law, forensic science, game design, screenplay writing, song writing, photography and concert production are the professions that will be explored at this three-day workshop. Royale Dá (San Ildefonso Pueblo), news anchor for KOAT channel 7 in Albuquerque, will be one of the keynote speakers. The summit is free and includes housing and meals.
To be eligible students must be Native American (from one of the 22 Pueblos/Tribes of New Mexico), entering their freshman, sophomore, junior or senior years of high school in the fall of 2009, willing to participate in the entire program from start to finish and be able to provide parental/legal guardian permission to attend.
To register, please call Ben Calabaza at 505.424.5732 or visit www.iaiaetc.org. Applications must be received by July 13, 2009. To learn more about the College of Contemporary Native Arts, a center of the Institute of American Indian Arts, please visit www.iaia.edu.
