This course will focus on Contemporary Native American Art, in particular art produced in the past fifty years. A variety of artistic practices that make up the contemporary diversity of Native American artists will be explored and examined. Non-traditional art forms and contemporary artistic expression, both two and three-dimensional, will be the focus of the course.

I. Course Objectives:

A. To introduce the student to the artistic, intellectual, and spiritual heritage of Native American artists who are known for their contemporary artworks.

B. To emphasize those areas related to the developments of modern Native American arts such as historical and political events, gender, religion, etc. along with the styles and symbolism used in the art itself.

C. To introduce the student to important issues that may have affected Native American arts and artists in the past fifty years.

D. To provide specific knowledge on a variety of selected Native American artists who are known for their contemporary artworks.

E. To familiarize the student with research methods and library sources on Native American contemporary art and artists.

II. Required Texts:

A. Native American Art in the Twentieth Century edited by W. Jackson Rushing, III, 1999.
B. I Stand in the Center of the Good edited by Lawrence Abbott, 1994

III. Teaching Methods:

A. Lectures plus slide and video presentations on Native American contemporary artists.
B. Discussion on assigned readings and focus questions.
C. Native American guest artists and speakers.

IV. Requirements:

A. Attendance at all class sessions is expected.
B. Midterm Exam.
C. Oral Presentation along with a Research Paper based upon a Native American contemporary artist.
D. Two written reaction papers to visiting guest artists and speakers.
E. Attendance to see artwork of a Native American contemporary artist at a gallery or museum and one required written response paper to the artist’s works.
F. Final Exam.
G. Class discussion and participation.

V. Evaluation, a total of 1,000 points:

A. Attendance counts 10% of total grade points (100 pts.)
B. Midterm Exam counts 25% of total grade points (250 pts.)
C. Final Exam counts 25% of total grade points (250 pts.)
D. Oral presentation and research paper counts 25% of total grade points (250 pts.)
E. Three assigned papers count a total of 15% of total grade points (150 pts.)
