The IAIA Museum Renovation Project: Goal $250,000

IAIA MuseumThe IAIA Museum, home of the National Collection of Contemporary Indian Art, has received a $250,000 Save America’s Treasures Grant from the National Park Service toward needed renovations of its historic building located just off the Santa Fe Plaza. Private support is being solicited to meet the 1:1 match required for the federal dollars and more.

Built in 1922, the building was listed on the National Register in 1974. In 1989, the State of New Mexico transferred the building to IAIA for its Museum and it was substantially renovated before the Museum assumed occupancy in 1992. However, several serious problems have arisen which affect the building’s stability, the health of its Collection, and the Museum’s outreach efforts. These problems were identified in an Architectural Assessment Report by David G. Battle of Southwest Preservation Services, as part of a 2001 Institute of Museum and Library services Conservation Assessment Program grant and have been re-validated by Mazria Riskin Odems, Inc. of Santa Fe and Landmark Facilities Group of East Norwalk, CT. Some of the priorities are:

  • New Roof - $125,000
  • Window Retrofit - $60,000
  • HVAC - $313,000
  • Floors - $30,000
