IAIA Archives: YK-636

The IAIA Archives offers primary source materials for in-depth research related to the history of the Institute of American Indian Arts (1962 to present) and to the Native American artists associated with IAIA.

The archival holdings consists of the following areas:

  • Miscellaneous Institutional Records, 1960 to Present: Materials primarily related to operations of the IAIA Museum and the Museum Studies Program.
  • Artist Files: IAIA student, faculty, staff and other Native American artists associated with the IAIA.
  • Native American Videotape Collection, 1976 to Present: Student and faculty videos produced for the IAIA Moving Images Program, Video-recordings from the Native American Video Archives Project sponsored by the Bureau of Indian Affairs and miscellaneous videotapes related to Native American subject areas.
  • Documentation Slide Collection, 1960 to present: Original slides of IAIA students, faculty, staff, campus, exhibitions, workshops, powwows, buildings, structures and classes.
  • Kay Weist Photography Collection, 1962-1975: Prints and negatives of various IAIA students’ activities such as studio-sessions, exhibition openings and powwows.
  • Yeffe Kimball Photograph Collection, ca. 1940: Images of Native American people throughout North America.


Request for Access to the IAIA Archives:

At the present the IAIA does not have a staff archivist. Access to the IAIA Archives must be coordinated through the IAIA Museum Registrar at 505.983.8900, x 107. Scheduling is dependent upon IAIA staff availability. Although chronologically organized, most of the archival material is not indexed; thus, researchers must plan to schedule their time accordingly.
