Artists from the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma and from the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians are not unknown presences on the Santa Fe contemporary art scene. But their visibility is destined for significant elevation in stature on February 1, 2008 when the entirety of IAIA Museum in downtown Santa Fe will feature work by artists from both sides of the Choctaw’s homelands.
Curator Tatiana Lomahaftewa-Singer of IAIA Museum states, “I wanted to show the strong creativity coming from Choctaw artists.” Some of the prominent artists include Randy Chitto, Norma Howard, Marcus Amerman, Gwen Coleman Lester, Argus Dowdy, Linda Lomahaftewa, Jeffrey Gibson, and Jerry Ingram.
The exhibition’s title is a direct reference to the earthen structures used by Choctaw’s predecessor cultures and other Indigenous cultures of this continent.
