Fritz Scholder: An Intimate Look
Joseph Sanchez, Chief Curator and Interim Director

In fall 2008 Fritz Scholder will be the subject of a major retrospective at the National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C. and the Gustave Heye Center in New York City.

In a complimentary exhibition opening on July 19, 2008 at the Institute of American Indian Arts Museum, curator Joseph Sanchez will present Fritz Scholder: An Intimate Look, comprising works selected from Scholder`s personal archives and focusing on those that he kept for himself and his extensive print inventory. The exhibition will include the Indians Forever and Roma suites of prints. Also featured are self portraits, vampire pictures, Egyptian works, landscapes, mystery women and millennium thoughts in various mediums. Major sculptures, and his final works reveal aspects of Fritz Scholder, the man and artist.

Fritz Scholder: An Intimate Look will bring home to Santa Fe one of its favorite artists through a retrospective that will provide insight on a long career and its contribution to the International art scene. Fritz Scholder`s contribution to the success of contemporary Indian Art and his influence on artists, native and non-native, is a legacy that continues to this day. His larger-than-life persona is illuminated through sharing the working process that led to the creation of many of the works.

The Fritz Scholder exhibition will also expose Santa Fe school children to the creative process. The ArtWorks project has again selected the IAIA Museum as the fall focus project for its in-schools workshops. Over 900 children will participate along with teachers and chaperones. The exhibition will include a summer workshop for teachers offered by the curator and ArtWorks staff.

It is with great excitement and pride that the IAIA Museum mounts this retrospective of one of IAIA`s illustrious professors from its founding decade, the 1960`s. The exhibition, unique in scope and premise, will be seen nowhere else.
