Museum of Contemporary Native Arts

August 2, 2010 – January 2, 2011

The site specific new work Apaches and Angels by Douglas Miles and his crew Lynette Haozous, Rebekah Miles and Razelle Benally connect the universality of skateboard subculture to today’s Native youth and beyond. Through their graphic graffiti imagery of Apache warriors and contemporary “Rez” portraits, they infuse the ancient aesthetic of mark making well into a 21st century sensibility of skate culture, and challenge the dichotomy of high and low, traditional and contemporary conventional art forms. Through the collective of Apache Skateboards, Miles breaks through boundaries, by tagging, reasserting and affirming a native presence to be reckoned with.
