IAIA Holds First Alpha Chi National Honor Society Ceremony
Santa Fe, NM | Mar 6, 2013 –
The New Mexico Gamma Chapter of Alpha Chi National Honor Society was officially inaugurated and installed at the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA) in a ceremony held February 20 by the National Council Representative of Alpha Chi, Dr. Trisha Yarbrough.
IAIA Studio Arts Chair Charlene Teters (Spokane) led the Alpha Chi Student Induction Ceremony. IAIA students inducted into the Alpha Chi National Honor Society because of their high academic achievement include: Teresa Fields, Fernando Charley, Crystal Worl, Rondee Graham, Upton Ethelbah, Kaylene Big Knife, Brandee Caoba, Katrina Montoya, Koty Jim, Jessica Manko, and Moira Garcia.
Alpha Chi is a national college honor society that admits students from all academic disciplines. Invitation to membership comes only through an institutional chapter. A college seeking a chapter must grant baccalaureate degrees and be regionally accredited. Membership is limited to the top 10 percent of an institution’s juniors, seniors, and graduate students. Some 300 chapters, located in almost every state and in Puerto Rico, induct more than 12,000 members annually.
Opened first as a high school in 1962, Congress reorganized the Institute in 1988 granting IAIA charter status as the nation’s only fine arts college solely devoted to the arts and cultural tradition of all American Indians. The U.S. President continues to appoint IAIA’s Board of Trustees today. Preservation and the continuation of the Indigenous arts is preservation and continuation of the first peoples in North America, according to the Congressional charter.
Offering degrees in studio arts, creative writing, new media arts, Indigenous liberal studies, and museum studies, IAIA is the only college in New Mexico with National Association of Schools of Art and Design accreditation. The school serves nearly 400 Native and non-Native American college students from across the nation, and is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges. The Institute is celebrating its 50-year anniversary.
